Old-Growth Timber SalvageRough-Cut Lumber |
![]() |
In the Autumn of 2003, in association with BILLCo. (The Byng Inlet Logging & Lumber Co.), we began recovery of the sunken timber in Byng Inlet. The history of Byng Inlet is largely founded in the activities of the Graves-Bigwood Lumber Company. In the course of its operations between 1880 and 1926, millions of board-feet of lumber were produced from hundreds of thousands of logs. Many of these logs sank during their journey to the mill, and have rested on the bottom of the inlet for the last 80 to 120 years. In the cold depths of the Georgian Bay water, they have been preserved and slowly they have acquired a unique mineral tint in a range of startling colours. Slowly the resins in the wood have been replaced by fresh water, creating a stable and rare form of material unseen in decades.
True old-growth softwoods have been non-existent for decades in the North American market. These logs will yield lumber that verges on the exotic, and the limited quantities we have salvaged to date are available for a reasonable price. Contact us by e-mail or telephone(705/383-0068) to arrange a visit to see this remarkable product. Samples are available upon request.
This page will be updated soon with more information on the lumber yielded from these remarkable logs.
